Clinical Overview
Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment that performs the functions of the kidneys when they can no longer work effectively. It filters toxins, excess salt, and water from the blood to maintain chemical balance.
Key Symptoms
Signs that dialysis may be needed include severe swelling (edema), persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and a metallic taste in the mouth due to uremia.
Treatment Options
Hemodialysis is typically performed 2-3 times a week at our dialysis center. Peritoneal dialysis is another option for some patients. Continuous monitoring by a Nephrologist is mandatory to manage fluid levels and electrolytes.
Prevention & Lifestyle
Manage blood pressure and diabetes strictly, as these are the leading causes of kidney failure. Maintain a low-sodium, kidney-friendly diet and avoid over-the-counter painkillers (NSAIDs) which can damage kidneys.
